The desire to react even more flexibly to customer requirements prompted Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Basel (Switzerland), to invest in a state-of-the-art automation system. Two KR 180 PA-type KUKA robots ensure that the sacks of chemicals are stacked cleanly on pallets or in cartons. The customer required a robotic application that could palletize sacks up to 25 kg.
Implementation / Solution
The robots and gripper system have optimized the packaging process. The intermittent conveyors for onward transport can each pre-buffer 20 sacks which are then fed to one of the two KR 180 PA robots. Depending on the program selected, both palletizing robots place the incoming sacks on the awaiting pallets. Their special grippers ensure that the sacks retain their shape. However, the pallets themselves are enclosed in a frame to ensure that the sacks are not stacked too loosely on them. Six 20 kg sacks form one layer. Each subsequent layer is stacked crosswise. In this way, the layers cannot fall apart so easily. The robots can now place the sacks inside the pallet that is enclosed by this frame. During the palletizing operation, this frame is lowered one layer at a time. Once the pallet has been stacked completely, it is conveyed to a stretch-wrap system where it is simultaneously stretch-wrapped and gradually lifted out of the frame. At the end of this operation, the now empty frame is put back into circulation. The pallet is finally conveyed through a labeling station in the lower level and from there to the high-bay warehouse. If the customer wishes, the robots can also fill cardboard boxes with two sacks each. The cartons are automatically assembled and then, after filling, automatically closed and printed with a barcode.

Results / Success
The customer has implemented a new palletizing system that has improved the hygienic conditions for the employees. The system runs 7 days a week in three-shift operation. It is only shut down for one week in the spring for maintenance and servicing. Now Ciba Specially Chemicals has a state-of-the-art system in which its products can be filled and packaged in even greater compliance with customer requirements.
