Robots ensure good formwork

Starting point / Task definition
Robots ensure good formwork
Robots ensure good formwork
Three KUKA robots at Werzalit AG + Co KG perform important tasks in the manufacture of formwork elements.
In addition to windowsills, which constitute the core business, Werzalit AG + Co KG also produces plywood, veneers, shaped industrial parts, bungs for the paper industry and formwork elements for the residential and industrial building sector. The last of these products is manufactured in three state-of-the-art systems, each with a KUKA KR 60 robot integrated into it. The formwork is a pressed form that is used for the production of concrete slabs. At Werzalit, these elements are pressed from woodchips mixed with glue.

The company only considered purchasing a system for manufacturing formwork elements because it was possible to implement a robotic solution. This is because customers in this sector place great importance on high quality at a low price.
It had to be a system in which a robot can perform all the major work steps, including those that go beyond simple handling tasks.

Implementation / Solution
The KUKA robot holds the workpiece and guides it to the tools. This dispenses with the need to change tools and thus saves time. The formwork elements are removed from the press with the aid of two linear units and transferred to a table where the elements are weighed. Parts that are too light are segregated by the KR 60. Finally, the robot moves the good parts to a grinding machine where the formwork elements are deburred on four sides. Then, in another station, fungicide is sprayed onto the underside. The robot stacks the finished formwork elements on a pallet. Two different formwork types are produced in each system. The KR 60 distinguishes between them on the basis of their position on the table and sorts them onto two different pallets.
System components / Scope of supply
  • Robots: KR 60
  • Controllers: KR C2
Results / Success
Each system produces 70 parts every hour. The efficiency of the system helps to support other less lucrative areas of the company. Werzalit AG + Co KG is thus able, for example, to make special built-to-order products which would not otherwise be economically viable. The company already had good experience with KUKA robots, having worked for years at the main plant in Oberstenfeld with robots from this Swabian supplier. System builder Rotech Tooling Germany also made an immediate positive impression with fast delivery times and precise implementation of the customer’s requirements.
