KUKA Roboter presents new shelf-mounted robot – KR 16 KS-S

Augsburg / Düsseldorf, October 2007 – At the “K 2007” trade fair, Augsburg-based manufacturer KUKA Roboter is presenting an innovation for the plastics industry. In Hall 11, Booth 04D, it will be unveiling the KR 16 KS S, which rounds out its product portfolio in the area of shelf-mounted robots. This “Speed” variant of the conventional KUKA shelf-mounted robots is sure to kick up the dust at the flagship fair for the plastics sector.
Thanks to their increased depth of work envelope and reduced intrinsic size, the practical KUKA shelf-mounted robots have long since proved themselves indispensable in the plastics industry. They can be flexibly positioned on injection molding machines, for example, and in many cases have replaced conventional solutions.
As the speedy specialist, the KR 16 KS-S is ideally suited for use with injection molding machines with clamping forces of between 100 and 500 tonnes. It thus takes its place in the KUKA product portfolio between the nimble Small Robots KR 5 scara and KR 5 sixx (for the automation of small machines with clamping forces of 25 to 200 tonnes) and the larger KUKA shelf-mounted robots (for machines with clamping forces of over 500 tonnes).
KUKA Roboter steps on the gas
When the KR 16 KS-S really gets going, it can put on as much as 20 percent more speed than its fellow shelf-mounted robots. Just how this looks is demonstrated by KUKA Roboter in its “Speedtower” exhibit. In a kind of continuous high-speed circuit, visitors to the fair can watch the KR 16 KS-S performing rapid removal. In a flash, it whisks a component out of a model machine, before setting it down at the same breakneck speed in a different position. The components return to the robot via a transfer system, where the robot picks them up again. The newcomer from KUKA is equipped with the Plastics application module, consisting of a valve unit on axis 3 and an E67 interface. The KR 16 KS-S is controlled by the service-proven KR C2 controller. Best of all: thanks to a cabinet extension, the KR C2 is also able to control two external axes – the model machine and the transfer system. Together with KUKA.Smart GUI Studio, which makes operation child’s play, and automatic gripper change, the KR 16 KS-S is an all-round, no-worries package for all users in the plastics sector.
KUKA Robotic Tour 2007
At K 2007, over 20 partners and system integrators, including Battenfeld, Krauss Maffei, Engel, Demag Ergotech, ILLIG Maschinenbau GmbH and SAR, will be demonstrating some of the potential multifunctional applications of automation solutions with KUKA robots. Visitors to the fair can embark on a Robotic Tour through the exhibition center. Whether used for injection molding, thermoforming or blow molding – KUKA robots can be found in every segment of the plastics industry represented at the fair.
