All the fun of the fair

The KUKA “Robocoaster” guarantees trade fair visitors high-speed action rides

KUKA Robocoaster
Augsburg/Munich, June 2004 – At the AUTOMATICA trade fair, the KUKA Robot Group, Europe’s leading manufacturer of industrial robots, is showing the way to the robot technology of the future. But that is not all – visitors are also being offered some high-speed entertainment, for example a wild ride on the KUKA “Robocoaster”, the first – and only – robot anywhere in the world that is licensed to carry human passengers. The highlight: trade fair visitors use a touch-screen monitor to customize their own ride from the available menu selections. A total of 1.4 billion possible combinations guarantee a wild ride over AUTOMATICA.

Two years ago, the KUKA Robot Group unveiled a robot with a gondola mounted on the end of its arm, seating two people. Thus was born the first passenger-carrying robot in the world – the “Robocoaster”. While that first robot was still equipped with a fixed program, the KUKA Robot Group is now presenting the enhanced commercial version at AUTOMATICA. This new generation of “Robocoasters” offers the passenger freely programmable combinations, guaranteeing high-speed action rides consisting of wild rotations, daring loop-the-loops and spectacular swivel motions. This “Robocoaster” already has a steadily growing fan club from the LEGOLAND® parks in Germany and Denmark, each of which has ten of these machines to delight its visitors. Worldwide, more than 40 “Robocoasters” have been sold to date.

The “Robocoaster” can seat two passengers at one time, who can choose from a wide range of ride profiles and speeds. No matter whether the program is gentle or extreme, this ride does require a little bit of pluck. Passengers who want to show just how tough they are will be whirled up, down and through the air by the robot. During this they experience considerable gravitational forces, ranging from a sense of doubled body weight to a feeling of weightlessness. Safety is always the number one priority for the KUKA Robot Group. The “Robocoasters” are certified by the TÜV Technical Inspectorate in Munich and comply with the relevant safety standards. This is the result of a reliable design and production technology that has proven its worth in over 60,000 robots worldwide. At the international IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions) trade fair in Orlando at the end of 2003, the KUKA “Robocoasters” were honored with the coveted “Best Product of New Technology” award.
